Celebrando lo que se puede - Celebrating all we can

Lunes 11 a viernes 17 - Monday 11th to Friday 17th

The week started with a couple of days of practices before the exam, which lasted 5 hours and was a wrestling against time. Each part meant a stressful countdown to answer a series of questions in the most logical and least ridiculous way.

Finished the exam, Wednesday night and an absolutely justified hard celebration came. Another OTW-Rosies combination to say goodbye to Elli, the Spanish girl with Cypriot nationality, dancing till' dawn broke. The moment of the farewell itself was next and not as funny as the rest of the night, but such a sad moment made clear we had a very good reason to visit Cyprus. See you soon, neighbour.

On Thursday, we went to George & Dragon to watch Spain v. Ireland (just one team played actually), in which a miracle happened and Torres scored. After the match, we went to a mask party involving both a birthday and a farewell.

On Friday, we played a kickabout at 2 pm, and had the last SU night of the year after so many good Fridays. The anecdote of the night was the appearance of two of the missing guests to the mask party, who didn't attend for being too late; they wore masks of 9gag memes. It's not I didn't like it, it's quite the opposite; I'm always glad to see Trollface and Mr. Bean around.

The weekend started and ended with a rest after the last night party, because 'The Amaaaaaaaaaaaaazing' Colin arrived on Saturday to say hi and bye, so we couldn't miss such a extraordinary meeting. We had a nice time in Powys' Court, as in the good old times, listening to the adventures of the one who went up to America and telling him what had happened in Chester in the meanwhile. See you soon too, and remember: keep on being that amaaaaaaaaaaazing.

Tiempo para apreciar las cosas - Time to appreciate things

Lunes 4 a domingo 10 de junio - Monday 4th to Sunday 10th June

This week was especially marked by the exam because this was the week of the speaking test, the most feared part. On Monday, I took up passive study for the written one, and from Tuesday on, I started off actively. Three practice sessions in pair to clarify what we were supposed to face up to on Friday. But not everything was stressful, because I had a lunch on Tuesday afternoon with my dearest girls of the group of Spanish. We ate at Bella Italia and drank something at Temple Bar. A perfect company to spend the afternoon. One more farewell, what can one do...

On friday, we went through the worst part of this awful experience we chose deal with. A rainy day with a deep feeling of stress for the short while we had to answer. Kid Rock, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Oasis, amongst others, were the only way to evade such a pressure. Once the exam was over, despite the fact it had lasted 20 minutes, it felt like 5 because the answers had to be really short. In the night, I didn't go out because, far from fancying celebrating the speaking test was past, I was worried about being fresh for the written part, which was in 5 days. No SU, but I could focus on studying on Saturday at least.

Skipping Saturday, which was a session of study above all, we should get to the best Sunday ever in Chester. We played a Britain v. Mediterranean friendly at noon, met at George & Dragon to watch Spain v. Italy (because, despite weather, summer's already come, and along with it, the Euro Cup), and spent the whole day lunching, chatting, watching Croatia v. Ireland and taking part into a quiz made for all the customers till' 10 p.m. Undoubtedly, I had the best Sunday I can remember. I slept sound.

By now, all what's left is to study, enjoy as much as possible and say goodbye. This week was Jose 'The Hunter', our dear “murcianico”, who left. See you soon, “acho”.

Más soleado, pero igual de nublado - Sunnier, but clouds don't go

Lunes 28 de mayo a domingo 3 de junio – Monday 28th May to Sunday 3rd June

First (and last) this year, I started to look over my notes in time. And I don't mean the few notes I could have taken in a couple of lectures, but all the vocabulary I've compiled along 4 out of the 5 years of my degree. A weighted tome to go through in a fortnight. And I succeeded in revising it even with some crazy nights included.

Dicho y hecho. Fuimos a Rosies. After a first look at the lists of words from Monday and Tuesday, I took the first break on Wednesday. We went to OTW, luckily didn't pay, and once in, we realised why. It's not that it was empty, it's that there were some tables on the dancefloor. As soon as we got in, we left. Second try: Missoula. Missoula was as good as usual, so bad. That place is just to take something and while away the time till' the actual party. No sooner said than done. We headed for Rosies. That wasn't our luckiest night, because the DJ had undoubtedly his worst performance. Such tracklist implied a blatant message: I'm not being paid tonight, so I don't give a damn for anyone of you. I had to give up earlier than expected, though daylight loomed anyway.

I went back to study on Thursday, and had a second break almost all Friday long. There were two farewell parties: the first one, on the part of the University of Chester; the second, thrown by two Finnish girls. The former was in the morning and consisted in gathering the internationals in a room with breakfast and white mugs to sign for the rest. We attended the latter very late (on time for Spaniards), but we had enough time to leave the coats, say hello to everyone, stay for 20 minutes and been kicked out by the porters for making a racket. We finished up the night at SU, of course.

After all, weekend was also about hard study. After eight (nearly nine) months speaking in English, the lists with verbs, adjectives, nouns, idioms, adverbials and grammatical constructions turn out much easier.

Algunas nubes ya se alejan - Some clouds are already drifting away

As I promised, this week was absolutely boring: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are summep up as some photocopies, research for references and hours in front of the screen of the laptop (as usual, but Facebook is less boring). By the way, summer has already come. Yes, it has come in May and just after those days of rain, hail and unbearable wind. Now, we deal with 25º, cloudless skies and lots of students lain on the grass “studying” with beer jars.

From Thursday on, the week got considerably better : after handing in the portfolio, we got ready to go back to routine. Night at OTW and Rosies, though neither the Djs were actually inspired nor the technicians had dropped by to repair the AC. Thursday was a key day for submission of assignments and carrying out exams, so everyone wanted to take a breath at night, but it seemed the AC was not enough to fight off heat in there. In short, a not so good night, but the ticket for Rosies was very expensive, so I stayed in as long as I could; I left at 3 (with daylight looming on the horizon).

Friday was specially good, because my agenda called me for waking up as late as possible. I took a breakfast for two and got ready to buy the necessary stuff for the... BBQ! Huge loads of meat for all day long, which is what used to happen in every single BBQ party I attended in Spain, but this is England, we are on Erasmus, and the morning was already over, so the huge loads of meat were reduced to 4 packs of each kind and some individual mini-BBQs which were pretty useful. I am missing Spain now.

The party was still a success. People playing guitars, unforgettable drunkers, even more unforgettable pranks to such drunkers when KO, farewells, and the same good feeling which has ruled every meeting of friends since Septembre. A great night, without clubs or whatsoever, just nice weather, time to chat and enjoy each other, and smiles at look at those who we have already shared 8 months of our lives with in an idylic atmosphere in an idylic city. Nobody can hide such smiles, nobody wants to hide them, and everyone knows we will miss them in looking into each other's eyes. Being out of noise from the speakers of a disco and stressing crowds in a house party, I think we all took a break to behold what happened around us, and I also think everyone drew the same conclusion: 8 months, with the same crew, with THIS crew... We realised we had made a family, a hard to forget one.

Mucho más que una fiesta, diría yo. Much more than a party, I'd say.

Weekend brought Eurovision, which is that musical contest actually consisting in compete to see which group of friends get more votes: the formerly Sovietic republics, Escandinavia or the ancien Yugoslavia. In the case of Spain, Eurovision goes pretty much like this: embarrassing, embarrassing, embarrassing, embarrassing, 12 points from Andorra, embarrassing, 12 points from Portugal, embarrassing, embarrassing, “it is always the same. I don't know why I even bother to watch it when they always vote each other.” This is the same process every year, step by step. However, it seems the new system to elect the contestant really works (they are elected by our national channel, not among a few anonymous candidates), because we get points even from countries we don't hang with. I honestly think the “high level” of many of the singers was greatly helpful.

On Sunday, I started to work on the only thing which still ties me to any academic issue: CAE (Cambridge English Advanced). Some overlook at the notes and stuff. In the night, movie session with “Silent Hill”.

Matando el tiempo (hasta la hora) de trabajar - Killing time (till' time) for work

On Monday, I promised myself to mend my ways, and later, I clicked “yes” for a party on Friday. Trust me; Erasmus is corrupting me. In the afternoon, karma tried to make me see sense and regain my lost diligency (though I haven't been able to be diligent with such a schedule putting lectures aside and enhancing the figure of the Erasmus party animal) with a hail of biblical proportions for 10 minutes. I could hear ice falling up to the fireplace in my bedroom and hitting both the roof and the skylight on the other side of the door. I was scared.

I failed again with a loud crash on Tuesday and Wednesday in my attempt to start my portfolio. I'll tell you how it all went on in the end. At least, I ordered my notes on Thursday, which is something (consoling yourself is so easy sometimes). In the night, I “took a break” after such a great effort for my part making the “3 in a bed”, playing previously a 7-a-side league match.

On Friday, I didn't even bother to worry about my work. I simply partied. We had a farewell pre-party for who had been the organiser of Language Café so far (we love you, Dale) and SU with a more than stingy “stamp” for 4 POUNDS. It seems they ran out of ink, so used a marker which, obviously, we all have in any corner of our house. I don't want to imagine how many people got in for free.

Saturday is the “House party's Day”par excellence. This was for a double birthday in a corridor-house. But before that, the final of the Champions League! Bayern v. Chelsea. What shitty game and score. Once again, football lost. The party did go well at least, despite a little problem of overpopulation (or lack of square metres). We got home with daylight, again, and didn't need turning on the lights to get into our bedrooms, again. I still went to play at 11 because I honestly wished to see how they put off the match for an hour. I won't tell about how we were beaten nor how the referee did it, so let's skip to the next week, which seems to be undoubtedly thrilling... thrillingly boring with the portfolio (oh, yea! There was a portfolio to do!).

Nuevo récord - New record

Monday was supposed to be my first day of work on the portfolio left, but it finally became a day for rest after the trip to Ireland. I actually did something: I read “The Hobbit”.

Tuesday was pretty much the same, but a stroll to Tesco Home to have a look at suitcases (this is coming to an end...), and an improvised night at Havana's after a couple of drinks at home. A brilliant night, certainly.

On Wednesday, I did nothing either (I'll regret later) but watching the UEFA Europa League Final and spending the night at OTW. Despite being a few people and going home at 1, it worthed it.

Tras Watergates, ¿a dónde fuimos? Exacto, a Missoula. On Thursday, no regrets whatsoever: Thursday is a D-Day; it's the “3 in a bed” night, and preceded by Language Café. What else? Oh yeah! Football! 7-a-side football at 7 p... hold on, what time am I supposed to go for the Language Café? Considering the game, stretching, shower and dinner... 10ish. Not bad; just 3 hours late. We were not the only ones, because nearly all the Spaniards were about to get in when we arrived. The rest went later. It was the last Language Café, so we pretended to perform a triumphant coming keeping everybody expecting and asking where the Spanish were? We are that spectacular. After Watergates, where did we go? Exactly, Missoula. You so know it, guys! Alright, after this kind of “Dora the Explorer” moment, I'll carry on telling about that night: we got the 2nd pass in Missoula, and had an unforgettable night in Rosies. I can't remember the last time so many internationals came along for a club. Simply brilliant. And when did we leave? That's it! When they closed! Sorry. Well, after saying goodbye, we all went home... and came across hardly of the Spanish at GoFresco! We spent nearly an hour talking in there. Nothing can be compared to go to bed with the lights off because the dim light of the breaking dawn is enough (I'm such a damn poetic guy sometimes).

Vaya susto me llevé. Friday was a nonsensical day. I woke up late, didn't have a nap (BLUE CODE: SIESTA NOT DETECTED) because I spent the afternoon talking, and played the famous Friday kick about in the end. After this and a shower, I was beaten, almost crawling along the floor rejecting the idea of missing Friday night at SU (ok, I've exaggerated a bit maybe). I was so tired (the nonsense comes now) that I had my siesta at 10 pm (CORE FUSION: ABORTED) to survive till 3 am; if I pay, I pay for being kicked out to clean and close up. I woke up at 11 pm as if I had been installed updatings and scanned with an antivirus. I finally could close SU. I was so afraid.

On Saturday, party was supposed to finish. It was supposed to. At the beginning, there was a rumour about a little meeting at home. As the evening went by, that little meeting turned into, firstly, a pre-drinking, then an expedition to Amphitheatre, which turned out to be closed since February, and in the very end, we made a properly speaking party, moved to nowhere else, and ended up at 4 in the morning. Do you see, mum? It's their fault, they make me party hard.

On Sunday, I woke up early to play a game which, after convincing three guys on playing with us because we were just a few, was cancelled for lack of players. A failure in communication... and a miss of sleeping hours as well. I could make some profit from my morning at least (mostly on Facebook). The time remaining went by in sleeping, eating and watching “The Shining” on the bed to finish the day.

In short, the week began with a promise of work not to be in a hurry and it ended up with 5 days of party in a row, beating my personal record on this Erasmus.

Verde y rojo - Red and green

This was certainly a quite busy week because I accomplished one of my Erasmus aims on Tuesday: to watch Liverpool in Anfield. Indeed, I watched it, but the match was deplorable. I mean, it was the same that watch the players in the hoarding shown on the store in the stadium. Anyway, singing the anthem is always the best part; I had a whale of a time only with the anthem: jersey on, scarf up, standing, voice in tune and a bit squeaky to let them know they will never walk alone. I think, especially after watching them moving less than statues around the ball, that the ticket only allows you to sing the anthem, and as it let you in, there's a game for free. Fulham won 1-0 with a rebounded ball, and the man of the match (ironically speaking) was Shelvey, the Red number 33, who passed everyone, both teammates and rivals, and even found out he had 2 legs at any point; synchronise them took a bit longer to him.

El miércoles fuimos a OTW y Rosies. Original, ¿verdad? We went to OTW and Rosies on Wednesday. So original, right? Well, the DJ at Rosies made some difference because played an always memorable hit, “Gasolina”, and an utterly forgettable crap, “Macarena”. Besides, luckily, two brilliant Djs (I assume the owners have finally fired or killed the others), and the same great companions made the night.

Dawn broke on Thursday with tireness and the conclusion that arriving early to Rosies (12ish) in the “3 in a bed” night might not have been the best idea, because so much tireness so far (this is the consequence of playing every “match”) made me give up at 2.30... thanks to the DJ anyway, who turned his non-lyric “hits” for drug-takers into 4Music and VIVA top 20. This meant an extra hour along which David Guetta, Flo Rida, Usher and Calvin Harris, among others made me forget about stiffness and the embarrassing idea of leaving at 1.30 which went round and round my head.

¡Vale, me parece bien! On Friday, not as usual, we didn't head SU (YOU BLASPHEMER! MONSTER! GO BURN AT THE STAKE!) because we had planned a 3-day trip to Ireland (OH, WELL! THAT'S MUCH BETTER, THEN!). Well, so the thing is that I didn't expect to read much in a 50-minute flight, but asking for our litter along the corridor when I had just read one page was exaggerated; we made it in 40 minutes. On landed, I had a great first impression: a beautiful city, nice weather, multi-culturalism... anyway, I've seen more red-haired people in Chester. The only negative is that Dublin is not the perfect Erasmus destination at all because... IT'S PLAGUED WITH SPANIARDS! GOSH, YOU CAN'T LEARN ENGLISH THERE! IF YOU LOOKED AT BOTH SIDES, YOU SAW FEATURES WHICH DIDN'T MAKE YOU SUSPECT THEY MIGHT BE SPANISH, BUT SHOWED A NEON SIGN WITH THE MESSAGE “SPANISH... SO DAMN SPANISH, MATE!”. Whatsoever. When we found the hotel, we turned on our philologists' skills and detected a Spanish receptionist despite what could be a perfect English accent for the majority, and took a first stroll to choose a place to taste something. Mexican food with blues music in the background? Fair enough. Great restaurant, great meals and great service... in Spanish, of course (Mexican Spanish, which is something).

Saturday was an intensive day tourist activity: a 3-hour tour around the city with a guide who looked as if she had took an overdose of Red Bull with cereals (hopefully, Red Bull). Then, we had lunch in an indian restaurant we had sized up last night. The smile in the waiter's face as we were back was good enough to get in... and the fact that they thought the extra money at paying the receipt was a tip, good enough to get out. Once we satisfied our hunger and hurt our throats with third-degree burns, we started a private tour around the areas we hadn't visited in the morning. Celtic music in the city centre, ridiculous pictures with statues, etc. In the night, we met Irish nightlife, and the only two original Irishmen I met among so many Iberians were full with beer... well, it sounds stupid to complain about such an evident redundancy. We ended up eating kebab and lolled in a sofa in a typical pub. It was not as normal as it looks, because managing to get into a Dubliner pub isn't that easy on Saturday night (“you're not in the list”, “pass your mortgage over here to pay for” and that stuff). Back to the hotel, a single image confirmed the fame of Irish as hardened drinkers is strongly deserved: a guy pissed on the door of a closed pub whilst other two leaned against each other so that none of them fell.

On Sunday, we left the hotel, its snooker table, the Spanish heritage of Dublin and Guinness Empire, wishing to be back with more time... and money, because it's bloody expensive. “It's not true that Temple Bar is more expensive than any other area of Dublin; Dublin is equally expensive everywhere” - Guide dixit.
