Tanteando la situación - Sizing up the situation

The first weekend in Chester was supposed to be a warm-up to take up again the rhythm of British nightlife. On Saturday, we reached the house at lunch time, and after a 5-HOUR siesta, got the welcoming party at Powys'. On Sunday, we went to Revolution because there was a mega awesome shitty funky party. It's not only that there was just a few people in there, but they also left. 2 pound wasted.
Monday looked better. The plan was Powys' + OTW, but let's better analyse it step by step. We DID HAVE TO head Iceland in the morning not to die or resort to cannibalism. The shopping of our lives. 15 minutes after we got home, the food was carried; this is life. Alright now, we went to Powys', and to OTW from there, proving the Erasmus crew is the first economic source of the city. Why? Because it wasn't that full if we consider it was a key party day. Anyway, we had to try at Rosie's. It didn't work either, but it looked more crowded. A good night though dead.

On Tuesday I had no more pretexts: I did have to grab the books; an exam and an essay were awaiting in the next week. As the day after, little did I do.

On Thursday, I got up at 9 to do some worthy stuff once again. The curious thing is that I got up totally fresh the very day I wanted to rise “early” but to eat; I didn't set the alarms in order to study precisely. Thanks, body; I see which are your priorities. The first British breakfast in 6 months on Erasmus. Well, if we convert British breakfast into its Spanish equivalent, it was a lunch: eggs, bacon, saussages... and the indispensable tea. I ordered it to have a proper British breakfast, but I ain't gonna order tea in the morning, you should know; I felt asleep as I got home. I wrote a couple of lines for my essay, and in the evening, an unexpected rave-up: we got Watergates for Language Café, and we were the first ones (even reaching Watergates an hour and a half later), then off to Missoula and Rosie's, enjoying a pretty much shitty tracklist; I missed the DJ said his bullshit all along the night.

I got to say hello to the library staff on Friday to ask about their holidays and famil... borrow books, you know. In the evening, an internacional kick about, players noticeable out of shape after the break, a calf lesion, and off to the showers. When the night came, we lived a real horror story: SU was empty in Friday night. As we got into the campus, not even the smallest noise was heard, and nobody went out of CH1 but veteran party animals. It was such an awesome party.

Saturday was time for a birthday, so the chocolate gateau at lunch was followed by an evening session of bowling. We made a fool of ourselves a bit at bowling, then I did it on my own at pool, we fought with the cues like jedis as “The Imperial March” sounded (yes, we can considered this as one more instance of making a fool of ourselves), and as we were leaving, they turned off the lights and on the lazers and disco flashing ones for bowling players, who also had that so motivating song from Space Jam's soundtrack as background music. I think we went to play too early...

On Sunday morning, we started off with crêpes for breakfast, and that's possibly the most remarkable detail, because neither the intake till' sickness of Nutella, jam and maple syrup, nor the session of Spanish we planned, nor the evening work seemed that interesting. Yet I have included them in this entry in order to make this paragraph longer.

Tras el tormento, viene la parranda - After a storm comes the awesome

On Monday, we had just one lecture, so we spread all over the leather sofas in Missoula to enjoy an awesome lunch. Fun was over, and you'll figure out everything with one word: PORTFOLIO. The goddamned portfolio, though easy, got me busy from Monday to Wednesday.

Nonetheless, this wasn't the torment I have been foreshadowing in the previous entries; the preamble instead. Wednesday night, I spent like a couple of hours by putting the ideas I had found both in the book I was reading and in a pretty shorter one which I read along a morning, making schemes, and boiling down all the chaos to an easy outline of primary and secondary points. It sound greats, doesn't it? Well, I started to type this 2000-word essay at 1 a.m. Yes, the deadline was on the next day. Fancy knowing the ending? Don't miss it on the next episode of... sorry, I got lost. The thing is that I was repeating “one more paragraph and I stop” and, finally, I finished it AT 8.30 A.M. Euphoria for finishing the longest essay of the year in 7 hours and a half and lack of rest all along the night hardly drove me crazy, and it made me giggle at everything ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES MANU A DULL BOY ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES MANU A DULL BOY ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES MANU A DULL BOY ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES MANU A DULL BOY ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES MANU A DULL BOY ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES MANU A DULL BOY ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES MANU A DULL BOY.

On Thursday, logically, I was supposed to sleep, but on Erasmus, logic is just a point of view when we talk about partying. I handed the essay in, had lunch at 1 according to the British norms, slept for 3 hours, played an official game at 6, heard repetitively the same excuse about a birthday every time I asked about the plans for the night, found an invitation for that very birthday when got home, attended, saw, and got back home... after dropping by Rosie's and close it at 4 a.m. As I said, the logical thing was to rest, but being logical meant nothing.

El viernes era el día de empaquetado. Maleta p'arriba, maleta p'abajo. Siesta... ¡y a jugar! Friday was the packing day. A suitcase over here, a suitcase over there. The farewell lunch before Easter break took place at G&D. Siesta... and football! Taking farewell as an excuse once more, Friday game had a special colour. Well, it had many, because each player was in one of them. Even the Sun shined. Who dared to play bad? ONE MOOOORE FAAAAREEEWELL; this was a pre-drinking. SU followed up, but flipping a coin for a flight was too reckless for me; I got home at 1 a.m., like good (Spanish) boys do.

Pues nada, a hacer tiempo... ¡AIR HOCKEY!
¡NO! On Saturday, we were drove to Liverpool 5 hourse after I went off bed. What for? So that the flight were delayed 1 hour. Thanks so much to all those who made it possible; especially to fog. Well, let's kill time... AIR HOCKEY! Like young boys... but those tables were pro, because there was a small glass screen in the centre to avoid the disk flew out of the table. It didn't work, because I threw it out of the room, and it was shot through the corridor.
Once in Spain, I went to an Italian restaurant, slept for 3 hours and partied hard from midnight till' 7 a.m. Take some notes, England. This helps sleep soundly, doesn't it? NO! SLEEPING IS FOR PUSSIES! STREET 5-A-SIDE FOOTBALL AT NOON! The best game ever probably because of lack of rest.

Con faldas y a lo loco - Some Like it Hot

On Monday I repeated my deed and reached 4 a.m. by typing on Liverpool accent (which is indeed enough to write a encyclopedia about it).

On Tuesday, I had, as usual, my Spanish class, as usual, everything was alright... and I had to hurry up to get home and finish my essay! Who said anxiety? I handed it in 5 minutes before the deadline. I felt I destroyed one more horrocrux of the Dark Lord; I was closer to real happiness. In the evening, we had a movie session in a house easy to find AT FIRST, but I like challenges: we made a 10 minutes way (taxi included) in 1 HOUR AND A HALF. I do not feel proud in any way of my innate broken compass...

Wednesday: 2nd part of pre-vacation overwhelming. A peaceful day of reading marked by the silent torment those pages would bring in a not so far future. Sheet after sheet, hour after hour, the most suffering out of all the nights, the most severe of the trials for a soul practically corrupted by the pleasures of an unworried life, which would however have to show it still kept some of that past diligence. I mean, I had to stop lazing around.

Tic, toc, tic, toc... it keeps on dying the time for preparation for the great task, it keeps on vanishing the options, it keeps on being left behind the pages of the slow, but satisfying progress. But there was a new Language Café session, which always feels good.

On Friday there was a before and an after in history. A key moment in my 21 years of existence: the cross-dressing party. It sometimes feels like nobody reads what I post on Facebook or Tuenti, but EVERYONE has seen the pictures of the aforesaid party.  I cannot complain; I knew what would follow if I attended. I honestly had a good time. I laughed out loud and it was one of the most memorable parties ever. Anyway, I got changed again before heading SU because, after the experience on that Tuesday in Rosies, I would rather not take on a skirt in a dancefloow (it was enough with trousers).

On Saturday, the flood of comments on such pictures began, and the deep sorrow along the flow of the pages of that book went on... but I ain´t gonna carry on with such a dark and sublime bullshit, because I get tired by thinking about poetic language that much. Sunday was pretty much the same, including a match which I managed so that my team did not win.

Nivel de fiesta: superior a 9000 - Party level: over 9000

¡Comportaos, hombre! (COME ON! As I told you in the previous entrance, we had, as Jesus and his disciples did, a Last Supper on Friday (it was still a lunch), but they didn't have a Last Mega Awesome Party. The week started with a farewell party at home, and not 12, but 30-40ish guests. Such a busy environment couldn't cause but an absolute mess. The house suffered the traffic of food among them, but music was the big deal. Watch your glass! Crap, a marker popped! Who's stepped on a shit and brought it in here? Behave, mates! (COME ON! UHMM, NOSSA, NOSSA, ASSIM VÔCE ME MAATAAAA) ¡Damn, "Ai se eu te pego"! Álex, let's dance on the sofa! As I said, music drives THEM crazy... As it was high time, we left such a henhouse and went to Rosie's... no, OTW... no, Cruise and showed our worth as party-goers till' 4.30 a.m. 3 hours and a half to get up and get ready for my lecture... well, I got up and got ready at least. I hope the others had fun in class. However, I didn't fail my girls from the Spanish class, and especially my lads for night partying.: Language Café, Havana and Rosie's (I ain't going back to Rosie's on Tuesdays in my life (even having pulled...)).

On Thursday I tested myself in the busiest evening so far in Chester: a lecture from 3 to 5, a match at 6.30, and a friendly meeting in the night. It may not seem that busy now, but the idea of a shortened siesta is determinant. The psicological factor, gentlemen, the psicological factor.

El viernes, ¿adivináis qué pasó? Exacto, pre-drinking y SU. On Friday, guess what! That's it: pre-drinking and SU. We skip to the weekend, because the torment before the break begins now. Besides the peaceful morning of psicosomatic recovery after Friday night and the morning football match on Sunday, I had to work restlessly on an essay about Scouse dialect I myself chose (filologists' stuff) till' 4 a.m.

Vaguear cansa; mejor como - Lazing around tires me out; I'd rather eating

We shall skip until Tuesday to enjoy a Gothic class with a video of "The Shining" included. It was hard to ignore the flashbacks about the parody Matt Groening made in "The Simpsons", to be honest.

On Wednesday, I managed to finish an essay in 3 hours, but updating the blog has taken me so long that I don't even remember which essay it was.

No estaba preparado; no había calentado. From Thursday on, as usual, it got better: Language Café and Missoula. Absolutely improvised, I was dragged through Missoula till' 2 a.m. I wasn't fit; I hadn't warmed up.

¡Dios, no me podía mover! On Friday, for the farewell of our housemate from Murcia, we had a Last Supper including death at Pizza Hut. I looked like Bender, the robot from "Futurama", when brewing beer in his belly. Gosh, I couldn't move! I had to do my best in my siesta, and even do abs to feel my waist again. Luckily, I got well and was able to warm up before heading SU.

We feasted once again on Saturday, because it was "Crêpe-party Part II: Nutella's revenge". If you pay, you get stuffed. This was the idea I defended before reaching the building. In order to defend it, I defended it going too far, because we took some presents from among all the goods left: Nutella, maple syrup (my new gastronomic love) and a few snacks. Time to sleep soundly, because eating seemed like a foolish idea after such an exaggerated ingestion.

On Sunday, we had to show our manliness... and capacity to overcome a disorded eating. We were supposed to play in the morning, so we hadn't to cry for a pair of crêpes. In the evening, I had to face an infinitely much more healthy task: the prelude of an essay. I can foresee myself working till' dawn...

La semana más española / The most Spanish week

That feeling of nostalgia didn't cease on Monday because we ate - as we had been proposing practically every week till then - at "La Tasca". That's it: Spanish cuisine. As long as we got in, we saw two waitresses talking in English, so we asked for a table for 3 in English in order to get some communication. Ironically, the pale-skinned blondie was Spanish. We rule! Anyway, we sat and checked the menu with Latin American music and surrounded by pictures of bullfighters and flags (we missed a bull head hanging in the wall). By the way, if there are still some doubts about the Spanish character of the restaurant, you should know they open at noon.

We opened the menu and found something called "Andalusian style squid". I felt something in my breast. As I'm luckily too young to suffer from heart attacks, it was actually a premonition. Bingo! The "Andalusian style squid" were actually something we call "chocos fritos" in Andalusia (and especially in Huelva). What were our chances of finding such a typical dish from Huelva in the North west of England? Did not even the fact that we were eating at a Spanish restaurant get our chances increased, because there are so many people ignoring what they are in the rest of Spain. I was about to cry, but I didn't because the salty "chocos" dehydrated me enough.

On Tuesday, I started an assignment... well, I actually organised my documents and my mind itself in order to know what the assignment was about before handing it in on Thursday.

I headed the library on Wednesday to work hard because a certain virus got rid of Microsoft Word, so I just can but install the trial version to read - not create - documents. I left my house in vain. Nothing did I, so I got back and borrowed a laptop to work from 10 to 4 a.m. I did an assignment based on a deep analysis in 6 hours. I will let you know as soon as I get the marks.

I started a new day expecting the best from the assignment I submitted in the morning (HAHAHA), and I finished it having a good time with some friends.

Triple combo on Friday: Erasmus kick about, pre-drinking at Powys Court and night party at CH1. A light stay to avoid tireness before heading York in the next morning.

No me concentro, no me concentro. On Saturday, we were three late risers in a hurry not to miss the couch. I did not fall asleep in such a 2-hours trip because the intake of caffeine (re-read and you will see I said "caffeine") was too recent. My Inspector Gadget-like overcoat had turned on the "sauna mode" thanks to the greenhouse effect happening into the couch (I should check the forecast before going on the next trip). I left the overcoat inside, and I missed it along the whole stay in York. I definitily need to focus on.

Firstly, we had an interactive tour in a kind of Viking museum. We jumped into a cable car driving us through several scenes from life in Jorvik (the ancient name for York) which were recreated for the visitants. The very anecdote was the choice of the language for the narration along the tour: Spanish, English, Japanese, French, German... and Old Norse! I have not played Age of Mythology enough, sorry.

We could highlights many other aspects of the city, such as uneven storeys (is there any School of Architects in York? Seriously!) and a fish and chips in which we got the dishes in two minutes and found many sachets of ketchup in every table. Burguer King and McDonalds should take notes, because it seems like their staff have to pay them with their own wages.

Sunday was a day of incertitude about the organisation of the football match, because we were not enough players, so we were not supposed to play at the beginning. However, they told us we could actually play 20 MINUTES AFTER THE OFFICIAL KICK-OFF OF THE MATCH because the rival team had accepted to play with only 6 players. I finally stayed at home reading "The Shining" and watching the final of the Carling Cup, because they play better.

Why "the most Spanish week"? We started by eating at a Spanish restaurant and finished not only by doing an assignment the night before, which has been common so far, but also by rushing to take the couch.

Improvisando la semana libre/ Improvising my Development Week

AVISO: SEMANA POBRE EN CONTENIDOS DEBIDO A UNA SEMANA MUY PERRA. YO SÓLO AVISO. SI QUERÉIS, LA LEÉIS DE ABAJO ARRIBA AL ACABAR POR SI HAY ALGÚN MENSAJE OCULTO O ALGO. WARNING: THIS WEEK IS POOR IN CONTENTS DUE TO A VERY LAZY WEEK. I JUST WARN YOU. IF YOU FANCY, YOU CAN READ FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE TOP ONCE FINISHED TO FIND ANY POSSIBLE CONCEALED MESSAGE OR WHATEVER.

I just could highlight an international meeting on Monday night. Not even so on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, we went off to Liverpool to meet some classmates from Spain and mess around to and fro. I think we do know the city now (the nice area, at least). We know the street where "The Cavern" is so well that we even know how many bricks there are in the walls, I think. We did visit Anfield that time as well as Goodison Park (both the park and the stadium) thanks to the indications that a very kind guy gave us. We could guess he was for LFC from his rude gestures while talking about Everton F.C. For lunch, we came across an Italian ristorante (called "Franco") which got us nervous as soon as we realised the 85% of the diners were in suits (the 15% remaining left their suits in the chairs). We gave the waiter no chance to turn back because we were already off and checking the prices. After analysing the dishes, I think I could have had a lunch based on garlic bread (only 2 slices not to be greedy). A cafeteria called "Ca'fay" looked better... and it was opposite the street of "the Cavern", where we met at first (a "stupid stroll", no doubt). Later, we roamed for a while till a McDonald's and tasted a cappuccino beating all the expectations about bitter drinks. You could find  more sachets of sugar on the table than coffee in the mugs.

The students who stayed in Chester for the Development Week met up in Watergates for Language Café on Thursday. We spent a good night with some new Spaniard (thanks to God! we were a few), some drunks and one more conversation about the controversial jokes that France played on drug-taking and Spanish sportsmen, but with a good feeling. I love you more than clenbuterol!

El viernes... ¿fiesta? Apasionante. On Friday... party? No, responsibility after 6 days of aimless lazyness. I started to read an article which I had to write about for an essay for The Gothic.

Saturday was the day. Hard party at... wait what?! THEY LIVE IN A HOTEL! If someone else says my house is great because it's 5 minutes from both the university and the city centre, I'll give them a "bifle", as the French say (these are the words I learn from my friends the Froggies, mum). Anyway, nearly 200 people (pretty much) in a still spacious "house" for a party which lasted till 5 a.m. Going off bed and see the dawn already breaking through your window opposite your bed is really awkward. The party was still awesome because, among other happenings, I came across a girl from Huelva. Do you know how great coming across someone from such a little and unknown city in Chester is? Alright, she was there because she spent her Erasmus in Chester, but it was a wonderful feeling anyway.

On Sunday, I overcame a titanic tireness with my sense of responsibil... HAHAHA! No, seriously, I don't know why I didn't stay in bed till 7 p.m. I needed the article to fall asleep. In the night, my brain reacted as it didn't before in Chester: as I met a girl from my soil and I wasted my time by watching videos about the Carnival of Cadiz (near Huelva), I had a fit of nostalgia which pushed me to watch videos about my city till 1 a.m., missing it.
